2021 June-July … We welcome “Mac” into our lives…
We arrived at our campsite Beach Rose RV Resort in Salisbury, MA on June 17th. The due date of our grand-daughter (our first grandchild) was supposed to be June 20th. Our daughter Cait and son-in-law Bruce have been looking for a home on th North shore of Boston and we had made this reservation with that location in mind. Unfortunately with the crazy housing craze going on they hadn’t found the right home yet and were still living in there beautiful brownstone in Charlestown, MA Boston.
The campground still was a great choice, though required a 45 minute drive into Boston for visits. We stayed at Beach Rose RV Resort which is a private campground right on the New Hampshire/Massachesetts state line with a quick bike ride to the beach…
We received a text late June 21st that indicated the expecting parents were headed to Mass General as Cait had gone into labor. Being respectful of this very special private time for them we waited patiently for news. I can honestly tell you that our excitement was off the charts …
Not hearing anything for over 12 hours we finally texted Bruce. Apparently unbeknownst to us the baby had been born healthy and safe but Caitlin had developed some serious post delivery trauma that created a very stressful few hours for them. Our anticipation of the birth turned to genuine angst hoping our daughter was ok. Once Cait was stabilized (which seemed to many hours) the happy new parents texted us that everything was going to be ok and our first grandchild “Mackenzie Palmer Dew” had come into this world June 22. 2021. The”Mac”, as they call her, was here and because of the complications we needed to give them a few days of private time before heading down to see them and her. Although she had been born on Tuesday they stayed in the hospital a few days arriving home on Thursday after being discharged from MGH. We finally were able to visit on Friday. Those were some of the longest 4 days of this “Revolutionary Journey” I can remember. We were very excited to hold “The Mac” and and finally get to hug our daughter Cait after the very scary delivery challenge.
Friday we got to Charlestown and we immediately felt better with finally seeing Mac, Cait, and Bruce!!!!
We were in love with Mac immediately and are beaming with excitement beyond belief… Cait and Bruce were very tired still, with the delivery nightmare still fresh in their minds, so we tried helping with the baby, walking their dog Dakota, and just being supportive. Over the next week we visited maybe every 2-3 days bringing meals and trying to continue to help anyway we could. Neither of us could get enough of oogling, and holding “Mac”.
While not visiting “The Dew Family”… we did get some time to do many other things during our 3 weeks in the area.
Bike riding around the area was a lot of fun for sure. We did about 12 miles of the local Newbury Bike Trails including visiting downtown Newburyport, Amesbury, Salisbury’s State Recreation Area Beach, and downtown Salisbury.
Since we were right on the New Hampsire State Line we did venture North into New Hampshire many times for groceries, site seeing along the New Hampsire coastline, and an incredible Double Lobster meal at Wally’s Pub – YUM!
On July 1st we took a drive up through New Hampshire’s Lake Region and made a surprise visit with college friends in Laconia. Lisa & Mitch gave us a tour of the local area and downtowns and then suggested a walk through Meredith, NH right on Lake Winnipesaukee. We decided to stop for beverage and a snack at Town Docks which was perfect right on the water… Great company and fun times!
Another day we drove the 13 mile coastline of New Hampsire up 1A & B. Enjoying the coastline drive we decided to continue North into Maine. We passed through Kittery, York, Ogunquit, Wells, and arrived in Kennebunkport after a few hours of driving the coast. We spent the afternoon walking around Kennbunkport’s downtown doing the tourist thing. We have been here several times before though it has definitely grown into a very popular tourist spot over the last 30 years.
We stopped for a beer and snack mid afternoon at a waterfront eatery that worked perfect. We had tried to visit Kennebunkport Brewery” though unfortunately it was closed for the day. We opted not to eat dinner because we hoped to head over to our favorite Lobster Hut nearby in a few hours. Nearly every time we have visited this area we have tried to stop for Lobster’s at “Nunan’s Lobster Hut”… (Yes the same spelling as our last name and probably related somehow from history back in Ireland many years ago…) – Eating at “Nunan’s” we both reminisced about our first visit here many years ago when our own 2 kids were still just toddlers.
Usually we don’t spend 3-4 weeks in the same location aside from our winter “snowbird” season, though we are so grateful for the flexibility this Full -time RV lifestyle provides us right now. Getting to spend quality time in the New England area and visiting every few days with our new granddaughter and her parents were what this time was all about. We would have loved to stay even longer though knew the new parents needed time for themselves with getting comfortable with this new chapter in their lives…
The Grand Parents….
Our last few days there we all got to enjoy the July 4th weekend celebrating the birth of our granddaughter “Mac”. The Nunan’s, The Dew’s, and the New Dew’s. We are so thankful Bruce, Cait, and Mac are the bridge to our families and this future as grand-parents on this “Revolutionary Journey”…
